Royal Gardens is a residential neighbourhood located in the Petrolia Subdivision. The name is believed to have come from Joseph Royal, lieutenant governor of the Northwest Territories from 1888-1893 who resided here. The main building type in Royal Gardens is the single-family house which makes up 43% of all residential buildings. Apartments and condominiums make up 34% and townhouses and duplexes make up 19%. Royal Gardens has approximately 3500 residents. Similiar to the surrounding communities of Malmo Plains and Greenfield, most of the housing development was constructed during the 1960s. There are four schools in the Royal Gardens - two public and two private Christian schools.
