A house with a legal basement is defined as a separate dwelling area. This includes a side or private entrance, separate heating, electrical and water systems for utility billings and insurance purposes. It must also have a sound-proof shared ceiling and meet fire code regulations if located in a basement. It also requires all nessessary permits by the city of Edmonton.

Houses with in-law suites

A house with an in-law suite is defined as a place to live where you have your own sleeping and eating quarters. There are hundreds of houses in Edmonton with in-law suites where you will find a bedroom, bathroom and a kitchen. These are not legal basement suites unless they meet a above mentioned criteria. An in-law suite is also known as a Garden or Granny Suite and can be located in a basement, over a garage, or even a separate living unit on your lot.
